People involved in a recycling initiative in the Hertfordshire village of Borehamwood may have been making use of storage solutions.

The local council has been running a project to encourage the activity, the Borehamwood Times reports.

Over the last few months, officers from the authority have been showing up at community events to promote the benefits of keeping items to be sent for re-use.

One of the issues connected with recycling is it requires consumers to hold on to their household waste - which some may choose to do by utilising storage racks.

The council is doing kerbside collections of glass, cartons and a wider range of plastics.

Meanwhile, residents who attended the road shows were entered into a free prize draw if they completed a short survey on their recycling habits and individuals were picked at random for a variety of gifts.

Among the objects on offer was a Brazil and Portugal World Cup football shirt made from recycled plastic bottles and an eco-kettle.

Councillor Jean Heywood said she hoped the sessions had helped to emphasise the benefits of using storage to keep products that can then be collected for recycling.

She added: "These events also give residents an opportunity to talk about any queries they have about recycling and then this information is brought back to the office to help us improve our services."

She went on to offer her congratulations to those lucky enough to win the prizes on offer.

Storage racks intended for keeping recyclable material in may be rising in popularity as local governments increasingly offer services for the collection of waste from homes.

However, there are fears among some that the government cuts being introduced may have a detrimental impact on such schemes as councils could have their funding cut and not be able to sustain them.
