Badges have long been a feature of clothing ensembles. They have been used for many generations in a military context, often reflecting the rankings and achievements of individuals. Meanwhile, they have also been donned by individuals to show political and religious affiliations and, particularly in more recent times, simply as a fashion statement.

Also, badges are also often sold to raise money for good causes. In this way charity badges have been responsible for the generation of a lot of cash over the years.

However, a duo of tattooists from the north-west of England recently took the concept of charity badges one step further, the Blackburn Citizen reports.

The individuals designed a number of permanent badges for the charity Cancer Research. Father and son team Sean and Lee Moore, who run Moore Ink, have created representations of the organisation's ribbons that it sells to make money for research into forms of the disease.

They came up with the idea after Lee's wife Gemma lost her best friend Karen Faulkner to cervical cancer. The conditions is a relatively rare form of the disease but it still affects around 2,800 women each year in the UK, statistics cited by the NHS suggest. The symptoms of the medical condition are not always obvious and it is sometimes virtually impossible to detect until it is at an advanced stage.

Moore Ink's designs are in five individual colours to represent different cancers. However, the pair noted that the most popular colour among people using their services is pink, which is the breast cancer ribbon.

The tattoos cost £35, with the vast majority of this going to Cancer Research and the rest covering the costs.

As well as his artistic endeavours, Lee has also held a fundraising event in a bid to generate even more money for the cause.
